Hayward Attractions

Hayward and the surrounding areas offer a variety of outdoor activities for you to enjoy. For one thing, Hayward is a great place to fish, especially for muskie, walleye, northern pike, and smallmouth bass. The area has numerous well-known lakes, such as Hayward Lake, Chippewa Flowage, Lac Courte Orelles, and Grindstone Lake. You'll also find "quiet" lakes in the area, where water sports (jet skiing, waterskiing, etc.) are prohibited, and the fishing is fantastic.

Interested in snowmobiling? Sawyer County, where Hayward is located, is considered a snowmobile rider's paradise. Sawyer County has over 600 miles of world-class groomed trails, some of which extend into nearby Chequamegon National Forest. And, because snow tends to stick around in northwestern Wisconsin, our snowmobile season can run from December well into March.

And don't forget ATVing. ATV trails run throughout the Hayward area. Close to 100 miles of ATV trails are available for winter use, and around 80 miles are available for summer use.

Local Events

Hayward is known for a number of world-class events. Three of our favorites are the Musky Festival, the Lumberjack Championships, and the Slumberland American Birkebeiner cross-country ski event.

The Musky Festival is a family-oriented weekend event that includes a carnival, an arts-and-crafts show, live music and street dances. And, of course, there's a catch-and-release fishing contest. The festival ends with a number of running events and a Grand Parade through downtown Hayward.

The Lumberjack World Championships pits the world's best lumberjacks against each other in a number of competitions. Events include speed pole climbing, log rolling, chopping and sawing, and axe throwing. There's also a 5K run associated with the event.

The Slumberland American Birkebeiner is North America's largest cross-country ski marathon. This 50K race  is appropriate for classic skiers and skate skiers. The route starts in Cable, Wisconsin, runs along the Birkie Trail and across Lake Hayward, and finishes on Hayward's Main Street.
